Blues at Skjálfandi Bay

The last few days, Blue Whales and humpbacks have been spotted in North Sailing´s tours at Skjálfandi Bay.

Understandable the Blue Whales have stolen the show as they are the biggest animals having lived on the planet... ever - much bigger than the late dinasours. A Blue whale´s tounge is the size of a VW beetle and the tounge is as large as a minivan. A fully grown Blue whale reaches almost 30 meters in length and then they weigh almost 200 tonnes. A fully loaded Boeing 757 with 200 passengers is only about half that weight.

The pictures here below were taken by one of our captains on a scheduled trip this weekend.

The breadth of the blue whale´s back is amazing.

The blue whale, like other, baleen whales has two blowholes, clearly visible on this picture.
