Safety drill and a visit to the Whale Museum
The weather today was a bit winter-like. The wind was way to strong for us to go out whale watching and the sky was pouring, both rain and hail. Yes, hail in the middle of the summer. That's Iceland. But although all the boats were tied to the pier the whole day we didn't just sit around doing nothing. We started the day with a bit tidy-up in the boats. Then we had a safety drill, went through emergency plans on the boats and then we went a little bit out of the harbour on Bjössi Sör to practise man overboard. It was a bit fun to go out there for a little while, the swells were really deep so I wouldn't have wanted to be out there for 3 hours but a few minutes was fine.
After the safety drill all the guides gathered in the Whale Museum. We are lucky enough to have three guides on our team who used to work in the Museum, Silke, Britta and Helga. So we split up in two groups and Helga guided one group and Silke and Britta the other group. It was really good to refresh our knowledge on whales and I think we all also learned a lot of new things. When dealing with these amazing, mysterious animals you never feel like you have learned enough so this was great.
Fortunately the weather forecast for tomorrow is a lot better than for today so hopefully we can take all our boats out again tomorrow morning.
