Work on schooner Hildur in Egernsund proceeds

The last few weeks 4 Icelanders have been staying in Egernsund in Denmark, near the German borders in order to work on North Sailing's schooner to be.

Mid November still with wheelhouse

Their job has been mainly to take out everything that cannot be used and has to be replaced such as the old rusty wheelhouse weighing about 7 tons as well as the big bulky V8 caterpillar engine.

Workshop and office

The wheelhouse now serves as "office" and the container is a "workshop"

The Icelanders are mainly good with the crow-bar and ripping things out although they will take care of putting a new and lighter scania main engine and new electricity in place.

It is however shipwright Christian Jonsson and his great team that holds the responsibility when it comes to rigging the ship up and replace damaged woods such as stanchions, gunwales and planks. In their workshop next to the shipyard the two magnificent schooner masts are well under way and look

stunning. They will both rise about 20 meters above sea level and are strong enough to carry about 225 square meters of canvas in 7 different sails.

About 2/3rds of the masts can be seen on this photo

The shipyard of Christian is a mecca for wooden boats and the guys working there know what they are doing. It is furthermore not spoiling that the crews and owners from Dagmar Aaen, Bodil and Carmelan are there for us in any way and give us great support.

Denmark has not been showing it's best side when it comes to weather as it's been raining or drizzling almost nonstop for over two weeks now.  But with a little help from our friends, everything seems possible. We will try to update on this project every few weeks this winter, so keep checking.
