A curious minke whale

In the beginning it was a bit difficult day, the whales seemed to have gone out of the bay when the first boats went out. Slowly though both the weather got better and the number of whales increased. When I went out at 17:00 it was absolutely brilliant.

Incredible sights in the evening sun

Had good luck with a Humpback and a Blue Whale in the evening sun today. The Blue Whales hadn‘t been spotted all day but in the evening sun their spouts light up and are easy to spot from very far away.

Foggy day but still, four species.

Unfortunately the weather had changed a bit today and it was quite foggy the whole day. The first half of the day we found two or three humpback whales, some minke whales, harbour porpoises and dolphins.

At least 4 blue whales in Skjálfandi Bay!

The weather in Húsavík has been absolutely fanstastic today, and so have our whale watching tours been.

I went out at 12:00 AM on our smallest boat, Knörrinn.  First we met our dear friend, a humpback whale that goes by the name Konni, which was here in the bay last summer as well.

Three breaching whales in one day!

I went on the first NS-2 tour of the season today. NS-2 is a trip where we go out on the schooner Haukur and go whale-and bird watching. Then of course we put up the sails as well!

The weather wasn´t the best and the sea was a bit rough, but like one optimistic passenger said in the end of the tour; at least it didn´t rain! That‘s the spirit!

Minke whales, dolphins and plenty of birds

The weather forecast has been predicting good weather for a few days now but we haven’t seen much of it yet. It has been rather gloomy and grey these last days. But like we know, the weather doesn’t matter for the whales, they are still there.

A nice calm day - 3 species

A big day in Iceland today, election day and Eurovision. But for us it doesn't matter which day it is, the whales neither vote nor sing in Eurovision. The both tours today were quite similar. There was a humpback whale in the middle of the bay, some porpoises all around and a minke whale

An amazing day!

It was raining this morning when I got to work and looking over the bay I didn´t feel excited for today´s tours. We went out on Náttfari at 10 am, captain Hrólfur, Tomasz (our engineer), myself and some 68 passengers.

The whales like the cold apparently!

It was more than just chilly today here in Húsavík. It was extremely cold and the sea was not at its calmest.

Sunday and monday

It got a little bit windy on sunday morning but it didn’t last long, the wind had calmed down in the afternoon. The weather fortunately didn’t affect our success with the whales. Humpback whales were seen on all our tours both days and usually minke whales and harbour porpoises as well.

Three whale species

This was my first day at sea this year and I can’t say I was disappointed. It was pretty cold, that’s to expect in May, but the sun broke out in the afternoon which was really nice. On the earlier tour we saw three nice minke whales and lots and lots of puffins.

Harbour porpoises

This time the visability was poor and there were only harbour porpoises to be seen.

Volcano eruption in South Iceland

Volcano in Iceland

Today is the third day of volcanic eruption under Eyjafjallajökull glacier in the South of Iceland. Now it seems to be stable and it´s worth mentioning that there has been no ash fall in the North of Iceland were we´re located.

Dolphins today

Today we went on our 2nd tour this season.

The conditions were quite ok, northerly breeze, quite calm sea but rather cold.

We started with searching for the humpback whale we left yesterday but it seemed to have moved on to a different feeding area. At least we couldn´t find it but hopefully it´ll show up soon again. On the other hand, we found a nice group of White Beaked dolphins and they gave us a good show.

Finally we went up close to the Puffin island where thousands of puffins have started preparing the nesting season.

We hope life will continue to increas in our bay but it´s still early spring and we´re even expecting some snow fall tomorrow!
