Whale Watching Blog

Our regular readers should know by now that there has been no shortage of Minke whales in the Bay this summer.  Some say this will be known in history as "the great minke-summer of 2010"!  Since the Minkes never lift their fluke and often stay submerged for a long time (not to mention their bad breath!) some whale watchers label them as "stinky Minkes".  Ok, Minkes may be more businesslike than the hugely entertaining Humpback whale but they are often fun to watch.  When feeding on schools of Sand Lances or Herring in the surface, the Minkes show more of themselves than when they are diving for food.  Our guide on board the schooner Haukur took these pictures yesterday of a Minke Whale feeding close to the shore.  The farm at Héðinshöfdi is visible in the background.
