Whale Watching Blog

This was a day for raincoats.  It didn't look like it when we started out this morning, being very sunny in the harbor, but it soon became apparent.  It only got worse as the day progressed, but of course this in no way affected our success.  In my second tour, especially, we were very lucky.  We were searching in the area close to the so-called "Skerið," in the western part of the bay.  There we saw a minke whale, but managed to lose it.  Shortly thereafter, however, we saw another black back, and then another!  Two minke whales had appeared.   We got an especially close look at one of them, as it came up right beside the boat, so you could clearly hear the blow, and see the ridge along its head and the two blowholes, as well as the shape of the tail under the surface.  Satisfied, we headed home, with many of the passengers retreating into the roomy cabin of Garðar to avoid the rain.
