Humpback party!
The sky was grey and some raindrops were falling when we sailed out from Húsavík harbor this morning with a full boat of passengers covered in oranges raincoats. Fortunately the sea was calm so the conditions were quiet good.
We headed west towards the mountains and the bay was full of birdlife. Just after about 20 minutes we already spotted something. It was a Minke whale circling calmly around. We weren’t able to come close to the whale because it was diving for such a long time, so we decided to head further out to see If we could find something else. That was not a bad Idea! Suddenly we spotted a powerful spout in the distance. When we got closer we spotted two more, so we had at least three animals in the area. All of them were Humpback whales! We got close to the first one and did spend quite long time with that one. The whale came up very close to the boat few times and lifted the fluke gracefully again and again so the passengers got some amazing photos. After this beautiful show we said goodbye to this Humpback and headed in the direction of one of the other Humpbacks. When we reached that one the Humpback slapped the tail at us twice, so that was a nice surprise!
We were running out of time so we started to head back to Húsavík and on the way back we enjoyed the taste of hot chocolate and cinnamon-rolls.
Back in the harbor everyone had a big smile on their face!
