Four humpbacks and a minke!
On our morning tour at 10:00 we were sailing towards the north-western part of the bay, into the area where we had seen a humpback whale yesterday morning.
We did not find the humpback whale on this tour, but in the same area where we had been successful yesterday morning we came across a small group of harbour porpoises and got some very close looks at a minke whale.
But this afternoon (13:30) we had probably the best tour so far in October this year!
We were sailing towards the mountains in the western part of the bay and after about 30 minutes of sailing, we spotted a blow from a big whale in front of us! Of course we went in this direction and just a few moments later, we spotted two more blows in the same direction!
As we arrived there, we figured out that there were four (!) humpback whales in the area, three of them swimming together, side by side – what a nice surprise!!!
And as if that wasn’t enough, there were was also a minke whale surfacing very close to our boat while we were waiting for the humpback whales to come up again.
A fantastic afternoon in Skjálfandi Bay and a very nice surprise to see so many humpback whales back here in the bay – fingers crossed they will stay around for a little while! 😉
