The first day of the whale watching season: Three humpback whales spotted!
This morning we sailed out to Skjálfandi Bay after a long wait over the winter. Everyone was very excited to find out what nature prepared for the first day of the season.
“It’s great to be back in Húsavík and a lovely start into the season with such beautiful weather and wildlife in the Bay,” said Christian, head whale watching guide of North Sailing, who is starting his 14th season with us.
Lovely conditions for whale watching in Húsavík!
We sailed from Húsavík on the renovated wooden oak boat Náttfari, an excellent whale-watching vessel with great viewing platforms. The weather was stunning, surprisingly warm with calm seas. After getting closer to the Kinnarfjoll mountains, Christian spotted the first blow of the season! Can you imagine the excitement onboard? Shortly after the whale resurfaced again, we could identify the first whale visitor of the season. To everyone’s surprise, we watched a humpback whale blowing and fluking around the boat several times! On the way back to Húsavík, we served delicious cinnamon buns and hot chocolate.
More space for passengers on board!
Some passengers were amazed by this encounter and decided to join us for an extra scheduled afternoon tour. They certainly didn’t regret it since two different individuals of humpback whales were spotted swimming and diving together on the second tour of the day.
This season, we’ve decided to reduce the capacity on all our boats down to approximately 80%, to make the whale watching experience even better.
Tag along when travelling around Iceland
We offer daily departures from Húsavík from March until the end of November. We are super excited to welcome visitors back to Húsavík, the whale capital of Iceland and one of the few places in the world where whales are seen with excellent regularity.
