Whale Watching Hjalteyri
Try an unforgettable whale watching tour from the charming village of Hjalteyri, a well-kept secret in the heart of North Iceland.
Step aboard our traditional oak boat and enjoy sailing in the calm seas of Eyjafjörður. This tour gives you the unique opportunity to encounter the great wildlife of the North, including whales and seabirds, all under the guidance and expertise of our most qualified crew. Playful humpbacks have found their summer dwelling in Eyjafjörður and are regularly seen on the tours.
We offer warm overalls during the trip, and you can enjoy a steaming cup of hot cocoa and a freshly baked cinnamon bun on the way home while listening to your guide tell you more about the magnificent creatures and share stories from the fjord.
Hjalteyri, with only 43 inhabitants, is a hidden gem of North Iceland. The old herring meal and oil processing factory, located down by the harbour in Hjalteyri, was the largest of its kind in Iceland. The factory shut down in 1966, and its buildings are nowadays used as a venue for art exhibitions and handicraft workshops.
While in Hjalteyri, enjoy the scenic surroundings and experience the aura of old times. Make sure to stop by the beautiful little restaurant serving local produce.
Today, Hjalteyri attracts adventure seekers for kayaking tours, a personal diving experience and climbers to its inside climbing wall. And don’t forget the hot tub down by the sea with a fantastic view over Eyjafjörður.
