Dolphins in great numbers
Today we had several minke whales with us both by the bottom of the bay and in the east, a short way from harbour. They were quite busy feeding it seemed, moving sporadically and hard to predict. Even though that makes our job a bit more difficult it is none the less very pleasing to know that the whales have enough to feed on here in our bay. We were able to get close to them after a while of following them as they did not seem to mind our presence.
As the day wound on we also went to the north of the bay where we found dolphins in great numbers just north of Puffin Island. The white beaked dolphins seem to have some adolescent calfs with them these days which seem very playful. Jumping all around the boat and swimming with the boat by the bow the little guys were extremely fun to watch, putting a smile on everyone’s face. We did not only see the two groups we got close to, but also many other groups jumping in the distance. My guess is that counting all, also those we saw only from far away, we may have spotted around 50 dolphins in all!
Puffin Island was beautiful today like yesterday, with many birds all around. The weather started off badly, with wind, drizzle and fog this morning, but as the day wore on the fog cleared up and the sun even peaked out at us at one time.
