Blue and Humpback whales!
We set out this morning on Garðar, knowing we had been lucky and found whales the previous day, but as always, cautious as there might be no one left in the bay. However it didn’t take us long to find a humpback whale. After seeing it dive and show his/her flukes we moved on as we wanted to check if there was any other species around.
Our efforts were rewarded. A Blue Whale came up, the biggest animal we think has ever lived on Earth. But it didn’t stop here, as some activity could be found further away. Searching for the source of the conspicuous blows, we suddenly found ourselves only a few metres away from four Humpback Whales, coming up to breathe side by side! The show was breathtaking, as we rarely get humpbacks teaming up here in Skjálfandi bay, they are usually solitary animals.
Our second trip was just as magic as everywhere we went for a wander we found some whales. The Blue Whale, as ever, was awesome to watch, and as this whale came closer to our boat on one instance, it was equally as amazing just to hear the powerful blow. We then enjoying two Humpbacks swimming together quite close to the boat, another special moment. And finally, just as we were heading back to Húsavík, close to the harbour, another Humpback Whale shows up and lifts his/her flukes! Overall an excellent day, Skjálfandi bay is literally teaming up with life right now, and it is a joy to witness it!
