Whale festival in Skjálfandi Bay

To make it short: Today I had two really beautiful tours with captain Hreiðar, and the afternoon tour at 13:30 was probably the best tour this month so far. We sailed out this morning at 10:00 in almost perfect conditions, really calm sea and it did not take us long to find a nice group…

Skjálfandi Bay at its best!

It was a sunny sky that greeted me this morning when I woke up and I immediately had the feeling that this would be a good whale watching day! The bay was at its best and there were smiles on peoples faces when we sailed out of the harbour into Skjálfandi Bay.   I was…

Two species!

I went on both tours today with captain Hrólfur and we had a great success! On the 10:00 tour we spent quality time with two Minke whales and got lucky because they kept surfacing close to the boat.   In the afternoon however we didn‘t find any Minke whales and the tour was more than…

Harbour porpoises in tough conditions

Today the conditions were rather tough with quite rough seas and cold weather. Still we mananged to go out in the morning and spot some harbour porpoises but the Humpbacks didn´t show up. Let´s hope that they haven´t left us for good and that the weather and searching conditions will be better tomorrow. 😉

Humpbacks still around!

Today I went on both tours, a 10:00  and 13:30, and I was very excited because I had heard of the humpback whales from yesterday and was determined to find them again today!   And so we did.   On both tours we saw a humpback whale after quite a search and we managed to…

Autumn Whale Watching

This morning, our crew on Bjössi Sör found a total of 3 Humpback whales and 1 Minke whale in the bay to much pleasure of both passengers and crew! The last days have been successful in the bay with some minke whales and dolphins but when the Humpback whales show up, there´s always extra much…

The comeback of the Humpbacks – Photos!

It was sunny, but also quite cold this morning when we headed out into the bay at 10:00. We started sailing in a westerly direction, because there had been some minke whales and dolphins close to the Creek Mountains or Víknarfjöll, as they are called in Icelandic. But after about one hour, we all of a sudden…

After the storm

After three days without sailing, here we are again doing our best to find the whales. The last three days were really windy (21m/s), rainy and cold, so we couldn‘t go out. Today the day was still cold, autumn has arrived but it was sunny and the waves were still high, but they couldn‘t stop…

Nice day in the bay!

Today’s tours are a good example of how different each trip out into the bay is. We return from the 10:00 tour around 13:00 and then we head back out there half an hour later.. but a lot can change in those minutes.   In the morning tour we came across a minke whale just…

A Bottlenose whale or not?

Today, there were two trips in the bay, as the days before. In both tours the passengers were very fortunate, because they could saw three Minke Whales, sometimes surfacing very close to the boat. The weather was also quite good, with wind blowing from the south, what means warm wind, but at the end of…

Great sightings of a feeding Minke

Although being the end of summer we are still lucky and the whales always manage to surprise us. The second tour today, at 13.30h, with Christian and Hrólfur as crew, didn‘t start off very well. in the morning tou they managed to find a Minke Whale, but this time it was a bit more difficult…

Windy but warm

Today was a very windy day, but the wind was from the south, so it was warm, not as when it blows from the north. I went on the 13.30 trip, with Hrolfur and Halla Marín as crew. When the wind blows so strong is really difficult find the whales, so we spent a long…

Beautiful weather and whales

The last days of August have been absolutely beautiful with still, warm days and minke whales that have been playing the main roll out on the bay together with dolphins and porpoises. The weather forecast for the next days is brilliant, southeasterly winds, fair with temperature from 12-22 deg. C.    From September 1st to…

A grey seal in the bay

Today was a great day for whale watching, the sea was very flat and the weather was warm and sunny, a great way to start the first month of fall.   A new guest in the bay made the daily tours more interesting and funny, a grey seal was seen near the mountains, the western…

A very curious minke whale!

Today I went out on three trips: At 10:00, 13:30 and 17:00. The weather was beautiful and we were successful on all three tours, but the first tour at 10:00 was one of the best whale watching tours I have ever had! It started with a mother dolphin with her calf, which we were able…

Harbour Porpoises and Seals

The Minke Whales and the Dolphins have been absent from the bay today though some of them have been spotted far away.  On the other hand, the Harbour Porpoises have been using the opportunity to show more of themselves and some of them were spotted jumping which is a very rare sight.  One of the…
